Chief Financial Officer

Competitive remuneration and benefits

The University of Portsmouth has embraced change to create a new breed of university, where collaboration and partnership underpin the way in which we work. We believe that a university’s primary purpose is to educate and transform lives, but also to transform the lives of those around us.

The University has once again been awarded a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework, meaning we are among the very top universities for teaching excellence. Our achievements have also been reflected in our research performance and student outcomes, but we are not complacent and our ambition is for continued improvement and excellence.

We are now seeking to appoint our newly created role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This is a strategic senior position, accountable for the sustainable financial management of the University over the medium to longer term. With a turnover of c£319m, the University operates in a volatile and complex market. The CFO will lead a transformation of the University’s core finance function, while working closely with the Board of Governors and University Executive Board to develop the University’s Financial Strategy to support its vision of becoming UK’s top modern university by 2030 and one of the top 100 young universities in the world. Through driving change and continuous improvement, the CFO will ensure that the Finance Directorate is seen as a valued and essential partner in enabling positive outcomes.

You will be a qualified accountant with demonstrable experience of operating as a senior strategic business and financial leader of an organisation of substantial scale and complexity. You will be a transformational change leader and an outstanding communicator and relationship manager. You will also be an experienced people leader and will work to ensure that inclusion and diversity are integral to the culture of the University.

The University is an exciting and exhilarating place to work and study that is well placed to respond to the opportunities of the future.

Closing date: noon on Friday 27th October 2023.

Final interviews will be held on Friday 15th December 2023.

We welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. We would particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, or from other ethnic groups who are currently under-represented at this level in this area.
