The successful interim will lead the continued development of the Clinic, ensuring it delivers high-quality legal services while providing students with meaningful, professionally relevant experience. You will also play a key role in strengthening the Clinic’s external profile and developing partnerships across the legal profession and wider community.

The role

You will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Law Clinic, working closely with University and School leadership to develop its role and contribution to wider institutional priorities.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Providing strategic leadership for the continued growth, development and innovation of the Law Clinic.
  • Leading the development and delivery of clinical legal education, including curriculum, teaching, assessment and supervision.
  • Overseeing legal advice and casework, ensuring robust governance, risk management, safeguarding, complaints and regulatory compliance.
  • Building strong partnerships with law firms, chambers, courts, tribunals, charities, local authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Representing the University and raising the Clinic’s profile, reputation and impact.
  • Leading and developing the Clinic team, with responsibility for budgets, resources and operational performance.
  • Driving continuous improvement and ensuring positive outcomes for students, clients, professional partners and the wider community.

About you

We are looking for an established legal professional who combines credible legal expertise with strong leadership, operational judgement and a genuine interest in education and civic engagement.

You will bring:

  • Qualification as a Solicitor or Barrister, or an equivalent professional legal qualification.
  • Significant leadership and management experience within legal practice or a related environment.
  • Experience of managing legal services, legal risk, governance and regulatory compliance.
  • A track record of strategic planning, service development and delivery.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and experience developing effective external partnerships.
  • Experience leading, developing and managing multidisciplinary teams and resources.

Experience of working within Higher Education would be advantageous, alongside an established professional profile within the legal sector. Experience of external funding or income generation, and a doctorate or equivalent higher degree, would also be desirable.

Why this role?

This is an opportunity to take a leading role in shaping the future of an important university-based legal service.

The Interim Director will have the opportunity to influence the Clinic’s strategic direction, legal practice, student experience, external partnerships and wider civic impact, bringing together professional legal expertise with education and community engagement.

We are particularly interested in hearing from experienced legal leaders who can bring energy, credibility and a pragmatic approach to developing a complex, high-profile service.
