Chief Commercial Officer – Rocksteady Music School

Who is Rocksteady?

Rocksteady Music School has a simple mission at its heart: amplifying children’s self-belief and removing barriers to music education.

Across over five thousand partnering primary schools, children learn to play in bands, build confidence, make friends and discover what they are capable of. For many, it is their first meaningful experience of music and for us, that matters enormously.

Our business has grown rapidly and organically because the model works and because of our people’s speed, passion and purpose. Schools value it, families engage with it and children love it. We are proud and grateful that Rocksteady has become the clear market leader whilst holding tightly to the values that shaped us from the beginning: inclusion, self-belief, resilience, teamwork, passion and purpose.

There is also a strong commercial instinct running through our organisation. We are proudly “for profit, for good”, with the belief that commercial success creates the opportunity to reach more children, invest in quality and build something that can continue to grow and leave behind a legacy.

Our goals:

Rocksteady already has a successful model and a strong position in the UK. But the UK is just the beginning, and we are committed to bringing the magic of Rocksteady to many more children worldwide.

There is more opportunity in the existing market, more to unlock from the sales engine, more to explore around pricing and proposition, and more scope to build partnerships that can expand access and create new routes to growth.

To this end, we are looking to appoint our very first Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) to help answer those questions and turn the answers into action.

Overview of the role:

Reporting to the Managing Director – UK, the CCO will have two equally important jobs: get the most out of the commercial operation we already have and find and deliver the next big sources of growth.

You will take executive responsibility for Sales and Schools Experience, leading through experienced senior leaders. Rocksteady already has people who know how to deliver, so this isn’t necessarily about running those teams day to day. Instead, it’s about setting direction, spotting the biggest gaps and opportunities, and making sure the strategy, systems, insight and performance disciplines are in place to help them go further.

Winning new schools matters and keeping those relationships strong matters just as much. You will bring commercial thinking to conversion, retention and customer lifetime value, using what schools tell us to shape the wider experience and proposition.

Around half your time will be spent looking beyond today’s operation. You will identify, test and deliver genuinely new opportunities, from pricing and tiering to new propositions, partnerships, funding models and routes to market. You will personally champion the strongest ideas until they are ready to scale, and you will also have the discipline to curb the ones that won’t make a real difference. Vitally, you will also help shape how Rocksteady grows internationally.

In summary, we are looking for someone who enjoys the full breadth of that challenge. You should be comfortable discussing long term growth with the leadership team and equally interested in why a sales conversion rate changed last month. You will bring ideas, curiosity and high standards, with the judgement and confidence to know when to listen and when to challenge.

Your previous experience:

We are open minded about where you have built your career. Education, entertainment, children’s services, subscription services, consumer businesses, technology and other commercially demanding environments could all be relevant.

What matters is the scale and quality of the commercial challenges you have solved: whether you have improved an established revenue engine, created meaningful new sources of growth, led through strong functional leaders and built productive partnerships across an executive team.

Above all, we are looking for someone who combines commercial imagination with commercial discipline – someone excited by the opportunity to help a high growth, purpose led business reach many more children, both in the UK and globally.

Terms:

  • Salary: A competitive executive package will be agreed with the preferred candidate, reflecting their experience and the scope of the role.
  • Location: The role will be based full-time at Rocksteady’s headquarters in Liphook, Hampshire, with occasional travel to Birmingham and elsewhere (1-2 x a month).
  • Benefits: In addition to a competitive salary, the package also includes a senior leadership bonus, 28 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, access to the NEST pension scheme and a 35-hour contractual working week (noting that this is an executive role and some flexibility may be required to meet business need)

Essential criteria:

To succeed as Chief Commercial Officer at Rocksteady, you will bring:

  • Significant commercial leadership experience with meaningful ownership of revenue, growth and commercial performance, operating at or working closely with executive and board level.
  • A track record of leading and scaling sizeable commercial teams, with a clear view of what great sales leadership, development and performance management look like.
  • Strong experience within recurring revenue, subscription or similarly retention-focused models, with a sophisticated understanding of acquisition, conversion, retention, churn and customer lifetime value.
  • Significant experience of identifying and delivering new revenue beyond optimising an existing sales operation.
  • Strong commercial judgement, including sizing markets, unit economics, and prioritising investment.
  • The ability to move confidently between commercial strategy and execution, getting close enough to performance, pipeline, systems and data to understand what is really happening, all without becoming too absorbed in day to day operation.
  • Evidence of measurable commercial impact when shaping pricing, segmentation, proposition development or new routes to market.
  • Strong commercial analytics, forecasting and CRM capability, with the ability to turn insight into action and better decision-making.
  • The ability to build trust and work exceptionally well across an executive team.
  • The ability to lead through established senior leaders rather than becoming the solution to every problem.
  • Genuine belief in Rocksteady’s purpose, combined with ambition, low ego, resilience and plenty of commercial fire in your belly.
