Lay Member of Council (Governor)

Voluntary – 1 to 2 days per month time commitment. 

The University of Kent is seeking exceptional individuals to join their Council as Lay Council Members. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of a leading UK university known for its transformative student experience, impactful research, and commitment to social, economic, cultural, and intellectual contributions to society.

Working alongside a dedicated and talented team of professionals, you will develop your skills and experience in a challenging and rewarding environment whilst also drawing on your own unique expertise and talent. 

The Role: 

As a Lay Council Member, you will play a vital role in: 

• Providing strategic oversight and guidance to the University.
• Ensuring effective governance and financial sustainability.
• Supporting and challenging the executive team. 
• Contributing to a culture of ambition and innovation. 

The University are now seeking three new lay members to join our Council, at least one of whom must have finance expertise, including a relevant professional qualification. Candidates with skills in legal, audit, HR, or marketing fields would also be highly valued. Above all, they are looking for individuals with the style and approach to meet the demands and needs of the Council, now and for the future. 

Successful individuals must be able to demonstrate: 

• A strategic mindset and the ability to think critically. 
• A commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion. 
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
• A passion for the mission, objectives, and values of the University of Kent. 
• An understanding of the higher education sector (or a willingness to learn).
