Birmingham City University is looking for an exceptional interim marketing leader to step into the role of Assistant Director of Brand & Creative Marketing, a senior appointment at a time of strategic focus and real momentum across the University.
This is a highly influential position at the heart of the institution’s brand, reputation, and recruitment activity. Working closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications, you’ll lead a talented in-house team to deliver integrated campaigns that attract, engage, and convert tens of thousands of prospective students each year.
But this role is about more than student recruitment. You’ll also shape how BCU presents itself to employers, regional partners, and other external audiences, supporting the University’s growing commercial portfolio and civic partnerships.
You’ll be responsible for campaign strategy, brand performance, and content creation, ensuring everything aligns with BCU’s purpose and ambition. You’ll lead the development of key creative assets, oversee external suppliers including the University’s media buying agency, and take strategic ownership of the University’s website, CRM system and social platforms, all vital to how BCU connects with its audiences.
This is a high-impact role, with responsibility for a large budget and a visible profile across the organisation, right up to Board level. You’ll work closely with senior colleagues across the institution, offering clear direction and expert marketing insight in a complex, fast-paced environment.
As part of the Marketing and Communications leadership team, you’ll also deputise for the Director when required and play a key role in ensuring BCU is positioned as a confident, compelling choice, whether for students, employers, or collaborators.
Who we’re looking for
We’re keen to hear from senior marketing professionals with experience of leading creative, digital and content strategies in large, multifaceted organisations. You’ll be able to balance big-picture brand thinking with hands-on campaign delivery, and bring a collaborative, inclusive leadership style.
Experience in Higher Education is welcome but not essential, what matters is your ability to land quickly, build trust, and lead high-quality work with confidence and clarity.
Why this role matters
At BCU, we believe in transforming futures. We’re a modern university with a strong sense of place, rooted in Birmingham and connected to the world. Our brand reflects that identity, we are practical and ambitious, committed and collaborative. This interim appointment is a chance to help shape that message, and ensure it reaches the people who need to hear it most.
If you’re ready to make a meaningful contribution to a values-led organisation with real momentum, we’d love to hear from you. Please apply below with your CV and a short supporting statement of where you will make an impact into BCU’s Brand and Creative Marketing activities.
