Are you an experienced governance professional ready to make an immediate impact in Higher Education? Anderson Quigley is delighted to be supporting the University of Chichester in their search for an Interim University Secretary, a key leadership role providing strategic guidance to the Vice-Chancellor, Board of Governors, and senior leadership team.

This is an interim appointment while the university travels through a period of change. Reporting to the Chair of the Governors and the Vice Chancellor, the successful candidate will provide professional advice and guidance on the discharge of their statutory, charitable and other obligations in accordance with the Instruments and Articles of Governance and relative legislation.

This pivotal position requires an individual with a strong track record in governance, compliance, and legal oversight, ensuring the University operates within its statutory and regulatory framework. The post holder will play a critical role in shaping governance structures, supporting strategic decision-making, and facilitating key operational changes, including a review of the University’s academic provision and business continuity planning.

Key responsibilities for the Interim University Secretary:

  • Delivering changes to the University’s operating model
  • Review of the academic provision and making necessary structural changes
  • Revising the Business Continuity Plan
  • Working with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer to define the responsibilities of key future posts e.g. The University Solicitor and Governance lead
  • Independently assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of the current governance and committee structure pertaining to the Board of Governors.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong background in governance within a complex organisation (Higher Education experience desirable)
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence at the highest levels
  • A pragmatic and solutions-focused approach to institutional change
  • Exceptional organisational and communication skills, ensuring seamless governance processes

This is an interim position based at the Bishop Otter Campus in Chichester, with a hybrid working arrangement requiring at least 60% on-campus presence.
