Anderson Quigley is delighted to partner with a leading UK university on the appointment of an Interim Executive Director of Research and Innovation to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their research excellence.
Practicalities:
This is a 6–9-month FTC, ideally with a start date before Mid-September (mid-October is possible, and November at the absolute latest). Full-time or part-time at 4 days per week considered, with 1-2 of days per week onsite. Travel and/or accommodation expenses negotiable. Remuneration on a salaried basis is preferred, but we may consider a day-rate inside IR35.
Overview:
Reporting to the COO, and as a key member of the University’s operations board, you will drive initiatives that ensure their research delivers significant societal and economic benefits.
Your interim leadership of 200+ staff will be essential in cultivating strategic relationships with external organisations, guiding the growth of the research portfolio, and strategically advising the research committee. Working with senior academic and professional services colleagues, you will develop and implement forward-thinking strategies, manage budgets and resources, ensure legal compliance, and lead the University’s R&I strategy. You will play a crucial role in enhancing the university’s reputation and influence, both nationally and internationally.
Essential Criteria:
Essential to the role is a significant track record of leadership experience in senior research management, business, or research policy roles, gained within UK universities. Also essential is in-depth knowledge of R&I management within the HE sector.
An extensive network of contacts at research funding bodies and organisations, both in the UK and abroad, will be key. Exceptional leadership and change management skills are essential, as is building credibility and respect with large teams, funders, and the academic community.
Crucial to the role is significant experience of research management, policy development, and the exploitation of research outcomes. A proven track record in managing budgets and securing funding from internal and external sources is key. Finally, the ability to apply commercial acumen to lead income generation opportunities related to research, knowledge transfer, and enterprise is absolutely essential.
