Director of Library Services

Imperial College London

Founded in 1907, Imperial is one of the world’s great universities, renowned for ground-breaking research, a highly talented community of staff, students and alumni, and international reach. Our mission is to achieve enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine, and business, for the benefit of society.

Our new strategy, Science for Humanity, is ambitious and seeks to maximise Imperial’s potential as a force for good in the world. Our Imperial Class of 2030 programme will nurture the most talented, enterprising and diverse graduating class we have ever served; the next phase of our White City Deep Tech Campus will be a powerful engine for investment, inclusive economic growth, and job creation; and four new cross-institutional Schools of Convergence Science will bring focus and research impact to the emergent forces shaping our future at an unprecedented scale: climate, energy, and sustainability; human and AI; health, medtech and robotics; space, security science, and telecommunications.

People are at the core of Imperial’s success and are key to delivering our new institutional strategy. To ensure our strategy will have a meaningful and enduring impact, through our Imperial Together work, we will create opportunities for everyone in our community to fulfil their potential, always guided by our values: Respect, Collaboration, Excellence, Innovation and Integrity.

The Director of Library Services is a senior post within the institution, reporting to the Registrar and University Secretary and contributing to the University’s academic mission and our international reputation. The Director is a member of both the University Research & Enterprise Board and the Education & Student Experience Committee.

With overall responsibility for the strategic and operational development and management of the Library’s collections and services, we are seeking a forward-looking Director who is committed to customer-focused provision. The successful candidate will maintain and further develop high standards and expertise, to ensure that Library Services respond creatively to University initiatives.

Through an innovative and pioneering approach to Library Services, across multiple sites and in partner facilities, the Director will ensure that the Library is recognised as sector-leading, somewhere that continues to promote information literacy and provide leading-edge information management which anticipates and meets the needs of the many stakeholder groups in our internationally renowned teaching and research institution.

An experienced and collaborative senior Librarian, you will be adept at leading and managing high-performing teams, across multiple workstreams, in large, complex and dynamic environments.

The new Director will be innovative and visionary, experienced in developing policy, setting priorities and objectives and optimising the opportunities which developments in technology offer, to ensure that the services offered remain first-class and meet the fast-changing information requirements of our University’s diverse community. Key to this will be the need to foster collaborative partnerships with the University leadership, Students’ Union, Academic Services Group, ICT and Property Divisions.

An exemplary leader, the new Director will be responsible for a significant budget (c.£15m pa), will be well connected in the global Libraries community and able to represent Imperial externally.
