The University of Bath is one of the most innovative and high performing universities in the UK and currently The Times and Sunday Times ‘Good University Guide’ University of the Year 2023. We are consistently ranked in the Top 10 in the country with a strong local presence and a broad international profile.

We are now seeking to appoint a Professor of Bioengineering to lead research and education in a bioengineering-related field. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the fore the fragility of health systems even in developed countries, with an acceleration of efforts, already underway, towards decentralised health monitoring, personalised treatments, and the integration of electronic and digital systems in both care systems and the management of complex diseases. Our new Research Centre in Bioengineering and Biomedical Technologies (CBio) builds on the strong international reputation of the current Centre for Biosensors, Bioelectronics and Biodevices (C3Bio), and extends its remit to include ground-breaking research in biomedical technology and bioengineering. This includes emerging strength in robotics and autonomous systems for healthcare, and major strengths in biomechanics, bioprocesses and tissue engineering.

The Faculty of Engineering & Design is a vibrant and diverse community comprising four departments: Architecture & Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. There is a strong research culture across the Faculty, with interdisciplinary research excellence combined with cross-University initiatives, responding effectively to global challenges.

The Faculty is now implementing a new research strategy by re-organising its research around large, multidisciplinary Centres with the critical mass and support to develop large research initiatives to address the environmental, economic, and social research grand challenges faced by humanity.

You will have a strong research and education background in engineering, linked to bioengineering, with a proven track record in growing a new area of scholarship. You will be an inspiring and innovative leader, demonstrating the ability to create, deliver and embed significant change solutions. You will have a record of attracting research funding to grow teams, and a record of disseminating high-quality publications worldwide. You will be joining a high-performing Faculty, filled with the ambition to make the world a better place.

Closing date: noon on Friday 12th May 2023.

We aim to be an inclusive university, where difference is celebrated, respected and encouraged. We have an excellent international reputation with staff from over 60 different nations and have made a positive commitment towards gender equality and intersectionality receiving a Silver Athena SWAN award. We truly believe that diversity of experience, perspectives, and backgrounds will lead to a better environment for our employees and students, so we encourage applications from all genders, backgrounds, and communities, particularly from under-represented groups, and value the positive impact that will have on our teams.

We are very proud to be an autism friendly university and are an accredited Disability Confident Leader; committed to building disability confidence and supporting disabled staff.
