Appointment of Dean of the School of BEEC

Leeds Beckett University

Apply now

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the role of Dean of the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing (BEEC) at Leeds Beckett University.

This is an important appointment for LBU and an exciting opportunity for you to lead one of our largest and most distinctive academic Schools.

BEEC brings together a broad range of disciplines connected by a shared focus on sustainable places, digital innovation and applied professional education. Its work contributes directly to many of the major opportunities and challenges shaping society today, including the future of cities, infrastructure, sustainability, technological change and community resilience.

Leeds Beckett University has a strong anchor mission and deep regional connections. We are proud of the contribution we make to our students, our partners and the diverse communities we serve. Our new strategy commits us to supporting social mobility, economic development and inclusive growth.

You will find a School in good shape. Under the leadership of Professor Akin Akintoye staff engagement and collegiality is strong, student recruitment growing, student outcomes are positive and the School has developed a strong research and knowledge exchange culture built on strategic external partnerships.

We are looking for a Dean who can build on these strengths while helping BEEC to thrive in a changing social, economic and political environment.

The successful candidate will need to combine strategic capability with strong people leadership and sound operational judgement. They will bring the academic and professional credibility to lead a diverse and collegiate community, the ability to work collaboratively across the University, and the confidence to engage effectively with industry, professional and civic partners.

This role reports directly to me within a relatively flat institutional structure, and the Dean will play an important role both within the School and across the wider University.

If you are excited by the opportunity to lead a large and ambitious academic community within a University that values collaboration, inclusivity and practical impact, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Professor Peter Slee
Vice-Chancellor, Leeds Beckett University

Teaching

Working in partnership with our students and the Students’ Union, we have transformed our undergraduate student experience and our students’ learning through exceptional and innovative academic practice and personalised support to our large and diverse student community.

Our teaching activity is organised into 8 Schools creating communities of committed staff and students who are passionate about their subject areas. Our courses feature collaborative, creative and practical learning in modern facilities that enable our students to develop themselves as enterprising citizens whose future contribution has a positive impact.

Research

Our research institutes and centres sustain outstanding research which informs our curriculum and our students’ experience in all areas. This research provides an enriched environment for an excellent research and teaching culture for all aspects of our students’ learning.

The REF 2021 results showed that 53% of the university’s submission was rated 3* and 4* and therefore considered internationally excellent or world-leading. Results were particularly strong in sport and exercise science, leisure and tourism where 89% of the submission was rated 4* or 3*. In the allied health and nursing unit, 80% of the submission was rated 4* and 3*. The results reflect the breadth of our research in these areas which includes improving gender equality in sports coachingtackling obesitysupporting women with cancer with fertility decisions and improving the training of people working with those suffering from dementia.

Our REF 2021 submission included 352 research staff across 15 units of assessment, double the number of staff included in REF 2014. It included research driving up energy efficiency standards in homes, and understanding and supporting the role of civilian peacekeeping.

Sixty percent (60%) of the School’s REF 2021 submission in UoA 13 (Architecture, Built Environment and Planning) were world leading and internationally excellent and 52% in UoA 11 (Computer Science and Informatics). Our research environment has improved greatly since then with the ambition to submit a greater proportion of our staff for the next REF.

Corporate services

Students and colleagues can access a range of professional services within the University designed and operating to support the effective delivery of our academic provision.

Services for students include Libraries, Sport & Active Lifestyles, Student Services and Campus & Residential Services.

Departments including Finance, Estates, Information and Technology Services and Human Resources ensure the University runs efficiently, that colleagues get the support and advice they need, and services for students are accessible and focused on meeting their needs.
