We are now seeking to appoint a new Student Recruitment and Admissions Director. The new Director will fulfil a critical role that sits at the heart of our Town House Strategy, as we aim to increase our student numbers.
The postholder will provide leadership and strategic focus for the student recruitment and admissions agenda within the Directorate for Students, across the University and externally. Leading a team of around 110 staff, the Director will ensure that the University’s agreed strategic aims as they relate to recruitment and admissions are embedded into functional plans and successful outcomes are achieved. They will lead the provision of a seamless experience from prospective student visits through to enrolment for students, ensuring the University’s recruitment and admissions processes are fully compliant with all relevant legislation and best practice and are underpinned by the values of the University.
You will be a skilled and ambitious leader of student recruitment and admissions within a higher education context with extensive and current UK experience. You will also be an experienced people manager, be able to build and lead high performing teams. You will bring resilience and strong communication skills, be able to manage and support a wide range of internal and external stakeholders with credibility. You also will role model our University values: inclusive, innovative, ambitious and enterprising.

The University is located across four teaching campuses in and around Kingston upon Thames. Our campuses are not only welcoming and supportive environments for students and staff, they are also home to incredible learning facilities. In the recently released Knowledge Exchange Framework results for 2023, the University has been assessed as having very high or high engagement in three of the seven perspectives – continuing professional development (CPD) and graduate start-ups, public and community engagement, and research partnerships.
The University retained a very high engagement rating in the area of CPD and graduate start-ups, exemplified by its long-standing reputation in enterprise education. Kingston is consistently ranked as having one of the highest number of graduate start-ups among UK universities – a position it has maintained for the past decade – in the Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey.
We are a leading partner in the South London Partnership innovation and growth programme BIG South London, and play a key role collaborating with HE, FE and business partners to support economic growth. We have been involved in delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) projects for almost 40 years with regional and national businesses across a wide range of sectors. Our expertise knowledge exchange and enterprise education was recognised in the Times Higher Education Awards 2023 within which we were shortlisted for the Outstanding Entrepreneurial University accolade.
The University is establishing four new Knowledge Exchange and Research Institutes (KERIs) to drive excellence and collaboration in research and Knowledge Exchange, reflecting the University’s growing research ambitions and increasing strength. The University more than doubled its QR income from REF 2021, in which 70 per cent of Kingston’s research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Almost a quarter of Kingston’s research was rated world-leading in REF 2021, with the University ranking fifth out of 14 University Alliance institutions in the overall tables. Five Units of Assessment saw more than 70% of overall research rated as 4* or 3*, while four Units of Assessment secured 100% rating of 4* or 3* for their impact. All 11 of the Units of Assessment the University submitted had a majority of 4* or 3* research overall. Since that time, we have increased external income generation through competitive awards and been successful in a number of new, externally funded doctoral training partnerships.
Kingston University’s commitment to high quality teaching, providing an outstanding student experience and supporting its students to achieve successful degree outcomes has been recognised with a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
The University has not only received an overall rating of Gold, a significant rise from its previous Bronze status, but has also secured a Gold award in the framework’s two new student experience and student outcomes categories.
The announcement saw Kingston join an elite line up of 26 universities and colleges across the United Kingdom awarded TEF Gold in all three categories, alongside Oxford, Cambridge, Exeter and Warwick. It was one of 46 higher and further education providers across the country to receive the overall TEF Gold rating and the only provider in the country to rise from TEF Bronze to TEF Gold.
Features of the University’s submission included its commitment to student success, exemplified by the work of the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Centre (LTEC), which supports students through such measures as developing a truly inclusive curriculum and reducing the degree awarding gap. The University also showcased the support it offers care leavers, young adult carers and students from a diverse range of backgrounds through its KU Cares and ELEVATE programmes and Graduate Success Centre.
Kingston’s work with first generation students, whose families have no previous experience of higher education, was also a key focus.

Kingston University is leading the way in the United Kingdom by highlighting the pressing need for Future Skills to be embedded across higher education.
The University’s sector-leading campaign championing Future Skills – the skills for innovation vital to drive a thriving economy – has been backed by global businesses including Mastercard, JP Morgan, Coca-Cola and Cisco. The campaign has also attracted widespread support from parliamentarians, peers and policy makers including senior government Ministers.
Kingston University is the first higher education provider in the United Kingdom to embed Future Skills teaching in every year of every undergraduate programme, equipping its students with the skills businesses have said are essential for long-term economic success.
Informed by our Future Skills campaign research, the University has identified nine graduate attributes most valued by employers – creative problem solving, digital competency, being enterprising, having a questioning mindset, adaptability, empathy, collaboration, resilience and self-awareness.

Position title: Student Recruitment and Admissions Director
Reports to: Executive Director for Student Services
Purpose of the position
As part of the Senior Leadership Group (SLG), this role supports the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in its work and contributes to the University’s strategic development. In this context, the role provides leadership and strategic focus for the student recruitment and admissions agenda within the Directorate for Students, across the University and externally. It ensures the University’s agreed strategic aims are embedded into functional plans and successful outcomes are achieved.

The University’s student population provides the key rationale for the University itself. The University’s strategy for continued sustainable development, both in academic and financial terms is dependent upon the size, diversity and potential of this community.
The University is transforming its Academic Portfolio by pivoting to a demand-driven portfolio that better responds to new markets, policy initiatives and grows its overall student numbers on a sustainable basis. As part of this, the University is currently developing its international student recruitment plan, and reviewing its postgraduate home recruitment activity, and is establishing a process for gathering and using market intelligence to inform a demand-driven portfolio.
The role will have specific knowledge and expertise of regulations around university recruitment and admissions – including visa compliance regulations and consumer protection legislation.
The role needs to respond to government expectations around widening participation, particularly continuing to drive the diversification of the student body. This will support the University’s position as both a key asset in the local community, and also as a London institution.
The effectiveness of this role will be demonstrated through increased student recruitment and retention in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Accountabilities
Role as part of University SLG
As a member of the SLG, this role plays a crucial part in contributing towards defining and developing strategy, policies and decision-making.
The role is the SLG lead for student recruitment and admissions and ensures its agenda is fully integrated into the development and delivery of the University’s operations.
The role is expected to work collectively with all SLG members to deliver successful outcomes on matters of common interest concerning student recruitment and admissions as well as associated activities.
Committee membership
The role will lead and attend key committees commensurate with its status as a member of the SLG and attend other committees as required as a representative of the Directorate.
Role in relation to the University Board – if applicable
The role is the SLT’s primary expert advisor for student recruitment and admissions matters. It provides information, insight and analysis to inform SLT level decision making, which subsequently feeds into to the Vice-Chancellor and the Board.
