About Marinela Holistic Education

About Marinela Holistic Education

We believe that education is a holistic journey that nurtures the whole child. Our unique admissions process is designed to welcome families into our vibrant community, where learning flourishes in a nurturing environment.

Marinela is a private, boutique school in the heart of nature in Barbados. With immense love, care, and responsibility, we have created an environment where mindful education, a profound connection to nature, and high academic standards blend seamlessly into a unified experience.

We offer a world-class education through a unique developmental journey — one that is richer, more beautiful, and filled with meaning — crafted for families who value essence over templates

Our offering

Our progressive education is strongly inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s pedagogy. We are a Waldorf-inspired school which places the developing child at the centre, prioritises holistic development and recognises the importance of intrinsic motivation and joyful learning.

We view education as an art, so each subject, whether mathematics, history, science or English, is presented in a way that appeals to and resonates with the child’s inner experience. Each subject is presented through direct, practical experience and is imbued with spirit and enlivened through art, poetry, music, and drama.

In the early grades, our curriculum provides an unhurried way of learning that protects childhood and minimises modern stressors, while encouraging children’s creative expression, developing their willpower, and fostering their imagination. As children mature, the learning process accelerates, providing a program that meets learners where they are, challenging their intellect and encouraging free thinking.

Our aim is to draw out the child’s inherent capacities by creating a classroom atmosphere that fills children with reverence, interest, wonder, and enthusiasm. Our teachers build deep connections with their students and lead with empathy, serving as role models and fostering trusting relationships.

The role

Head of School (AQ3540)

The role

The school is small, with a maximum capacity of 50 students. The team consists of 6–7 staff members. This is not a large institution, but a compact school with high standards, where the Head of School must be both a strategist and a strong operational manager.

This is not an administrative position. We need a leader who can build systems, maintain structure, control processes, and at the same time preserve a warm, respectful educational environment.

Below is a comprehensive description of the role.

General Role and Scope of Responsibility

  • The Director carries full operational, organizational, and academic responsibility for the functioning of the school.
  • He or she is responsible for the daily running of the school, the quality of the educational process, team management, maintaining standards, regulatory compliance, parent relations, and strategic development.
  • The Director works closely with the Founder but takes full responsibility for structured management and execution.

Operational Management

  • The Director must build and maintain a clear management system. This includes implementing a structured workflow where tasks are clearly defined, deadlines are set, responsibilities are assigned, reports are submitted, and follow-up is ensured.
  • The Director oversees execution, organizes regular team meetings, prepares a weekly management report to the Founder, maintains discipline and order within the school, and ensures that internal standards are consistently upheld.
  • The school must operate without chaos, without reliance on verbal agreements, and without missed responsibilities.

Human Resources and Team Leadership

  • The Director is responsible for coordinating a team of 6–7 staff members, preparing schedules, monitoring attendance, organizing substitutes when necessary, participating in recruitment, onboarding and adaptation of new staff, conducting regular performance evaluations, providing corrective feedback, handling difficult conversations, and initiating disciplinary procedures when required.
  • It is essential that the candidate can lead a small team firmly but respectfully, without toxicity, and with clear boundaries.

Academic Leadership and Program Quality

  • As the school is Waldorf-inspired, the Director should ideally have experience with Waldorf/Steiner education or, at minimum, a genuine understanding of and commitment to child-centered education and the willingness to study and implement Waldorf principles.
  • The Director oversees the implementation of the curriculum, monitors lesson quality, ensures that the environment is developmentally appropriate, participates in annual academic planning, coordinates term planning, and supervises after-school programs and clubs.
  • This role requires real understanding of educational substance, not just administration.

Calendar, Preparation Days, and Professional Development

  • The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining the official school calendar, organizing mandatory preparation days before each academic period, and coordinating professional development.
  • Required training includes First Aid, Safeguarding and Child Protection, annual pedagogical training, organizational training, and classroom standards training.
  • Professional development must be structured and intentional, not ad hoc.

Licensing and Regulatory Compliance

  • This is a critical area of responsibility.
  • The Director is responsible for maintaining the school’s active license, preparing and submitting documentation for renewal, coordinating inspections such as fire and health inspections, liaising with government authorities, ensuring all regulatory deadlines are met, maintaining compliance documentation, and immediately informing the Founder of any regulatory risks or concerns.

Financial and Administrative Oversight

  • While the Director may not handle bookkeeping directly, he or she must oversee operational budget control, ensure responsible use of resources, supervise payments related to after-school programs where applicable, monitor contracts and waivers, and ensure proper documentation processes are maintained.

Parent Relations and School Reputation

  • The Director communicates with parents regarding operational matters, maintains high service standards, resolves conflicts professionally, and represents the school appropriately.
  • In a small school environment, the Director may also support the school’s external communication strategy, including documentation of school events and occasional visual content creation, when necessary.

Strategic Development

  • The Director participates in strategic planning, structural development, and the implementation of internal policies.
  • Together with the Founder, the Director should develop and implement core documents such as Staff Responsibilities, Holiday and Attendance Policy, Classroom Standards, and Communication Protocols.

Personal Profile

  • We are looking for someone who is structured, energetic, efficient, emotionally stable, capable of both giving and receiving direct professional feedback, not prone to dramatization, highly responsible, and strong in written and verbal communication.
  • The candidate must be comfortable working in a small school environment where leadership is visible and hands-on.

Experience

  • Ideally, the candidate has experience as a Head of School or School Manager, experience in a private school setting, experience managing a small team, and familiarity with alternative education models.
