About ARU

ARU’s story starts in 1858, with the opening of Cambridge School of Art. Over the years a number of colleges and higher education institutes – including the art school – have come together to form Anglia Ruskin University.

Our focus has always been on transforming lives through innovative, inclusive and entrepreneurial education and research – and this still underpins our vision and values today. Our over-arching vision is supported by our ten-year strategy, Designing our future 2017-26.

As a University, we’re managed by a Board of Governors and a Senate. Our Vice Chancellor, Professor Roderick Watkins, is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of ARU. Roderick is supported by the Vice Chancellor’s Group (VCG) which consists of two Deputy Vice Chancellors, each with specific areas of responsibility, plus the Chief Operating Officer, Director of Finance and the Secretary and Clerk to the Governors.

We have four faculties at ARU, each providing students, industry and the academic community with professionally focused and world-leading courses and research.

The four Pro Vice-Chancellors/Deans of Faculties all report directly to the Vice Chancellor and are members of the University Executive Team (UET), the University’s executive decision-making body. The Heads of Schools report into the Pro Vice-Chancellors/Deans.

About the Chelmsford campus

We have invested in the Chelmsford campus which is now home to outstanding facilities including:

  • Our new School of Medicine, which is training a whole new generation of doctors.
  • One of the largest business schools in the East of England, based in the award-winning Lord Ashcroft Building.
  • High-quality study facilities – lecture theatres of course, but also mock hospital wards and our medical science SuperLabs.

  • Restaurant, cafés and plenty of outdoor space.
  • Arise Chelmsford, an innovation centre to support businesses that are just starting out.
  • A range of services including our Students’ Union, medical centre, gym, ARU Temps, and finance and accommodation offices.

You can find out more about the Chelmsford campus here.

About the Cambridge Campus

The Cambridge School of Art first opened its doors in 1858. The art school grew to become Anglia Ruskin University and it is still at the heart of our modern-day campus on East Road. Surrounding the red-brick Victorian building, with its vaulted ceilings and light-filled studios, is a host of new facilities including:

  • Our Business School, which wraps around a tree-filled central courtyard.
  • High-quality study facilities – lecture theatres of course, but also a mock law court, forensic science labs, and a TV studio.
  • A dedicated Science Centre featuring molecular biology and psychology labs, a 220-seat SuperLab, and five crime scene rooms.
  • The university library and open access computer area.
  • Cafés and roof terraces.
  • The Mumford Theatre and Ruskin Gallery.
  • A range of services including our Students’ Union shop, medical centre, gym, ARU Temps, and finance and accommodation offices.

Just around the corner from campus, there’s our dedicated healthcare site on Young Street, which houses state-of-the-art clinical skills labs including mock hospital wards, and a child nursing and midwifery ward.

Meanwhile Compass House – a short walk along East Road – features audio and music technology recording studios, sport and exercise science labs, and computer science/gaming labs.

We’ve invested £100 million in our facilities in the past five years, and plan to invest a further £91 million over the next five years.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We are committed to valuing and celebrating our diversity and promoting equality and inclusion.

We seek to develop our people and equip our students for life in a multicultural and diverse society. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment in which to work and study, where treating others with dignity, courtesy and respect is standard. This ethos is reflected in our vision and values and our strategy, Designing our future 2017-2026.

To track our progress and to fulfil our Public Sector Equality Duty, we publicly report on our pay gap figures as well as our staff profile and recruitment data annually. You can find these reports on our staff data page.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group (EDIG), Student Success Steering Group (SSSG) and Access and Participation Steering Group (APSG) promote inclusion and respect for diversity among Anglia Ruskin staff and students respectively.

About Research and Innovation

We’re passionate about research at ARU: its potential to innovate, and its power to enhance social, cultural and economic well-being at national and global levels.

Our reputation as a centre for outstanding research continues to grow. ARU is home to six research institutes and one cross-institutional research centre, whose work is having a positive impact on the world. Our institutes focus on subjects including music therapy, sustainability, policing and crime, and clinical and medical innovation.

Alongside these institutes is a range of research groupings across our multi-disciplinary institutional research environment. You can read more about these here.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), we submitted research in sixteen subject areas and nine of those have achieved world-leading impact.  We’ve invested £122 million in state-of-the-art facilities, with more on the way providing a supportive environment where all research-active staff and postgraduate students can excel.

In November 2021, ARU was awarded The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its world-leading music therapy work, in particular for its research with people living with dementia, and their families. The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes recognise outstanding work by UK universities and colleges that shows the highest levels of quality and innovation and delivers significant public benefit.

ARU’s track record of successful industry partnership is in evidence via our Innovation Centres (ARISE) in Chelmsford and Harlow, which have attracted companies in the areas of medical technology and advanced engineering as tenants; and the strategic partnership between ARU and TWI Ltd to jointly fund and establish the Anglia Ruskin Innovation Centre (ARIC), with the aim of positioning it as a world leader in industrially relevant, digital transformation and innovation management research. ARIC is based at TWI’s Cambridge headquarters and focussed on R&D programmes developing the next generation of business models and tools to help commercialise technologies which address societal challenges around skills, digitalization, net zero and more circular economies. ARIC has already secured a large Horizon EU grant ‘Upskill’, exploring the future of ‘Industry 5.0’ in partnership with businesses from the UK, Sweden, Germany, and Italy. We have many other exciting partnerships and projects currently under development.

We are now at the start of an ambitious programme of work to implement our new integrated R&I, Education & Operating strategies, there is significant opportunity for ambitious, strategic, impact-focused individuals to join our entrepreneurial University and to shape and make a significant contribution to this programme of work. The Faculty Deputy Dean for R&I will work alongside three colleagues in equivalent roles in our other Faculties, academic researchers and professional services staff, on further investment, success and impact in our R&I activities.
