The role of Dean of Sheffield University Management School and Chair is of key strategic importance to the University.

We are seeking candidates for the position of Dean, a pivotal role in leading the School’s academic community through the next phase of growth and development. The Dean of Sheffield University Management School will play a crucial role in shaping the institution’s future success. This involves developing an ambitious vision and strategy to ensure the School’s financial security and global recognition, aligning it with broader Faculty and University plans. In terms of leadership and management, the Dean will foster an environment conducive to active management and engaged decision-making, while contributing to the overall leadership of the Faculty. Financial oversight responsibilities include maintaining control over School budgets and shared costs.

As Dean, it is expected that you will have a strong academic record and standing, operating at Professorial level, with a proven track record of leadership and management. In addition, you should have a strong commitment to promoting a supportive environment that fosters excellence in research and teaching within the School. Ethical practices, continuous improvement, compliance, and sustainability initiatives are integral components of this multifaceted position.

We are open to applications from internationally recognised scholars with a profile commensurate with a Chair appointment in a relevant subject area. As Dean, you will work closely with the School’s senior team and, more generally will find a Management School that is defined by a collaborative and inclusive community with a strong shared ethos of working together to deliver.

  • Develop an ambitious vision and strategy for the School’s financial security and global recognition.
  • Align the vision with wider Faculty and University strategic plans.
  • Foster a leadership environment promoting active management, clear consultation, and engaged decision-making.

Terms of appointment

This post will be a Professorial post and will be offered on an open-ended basis. The role of Dean will be offered to successful candidates for an initial period of five years, extendable by mutual agreement. The appointed candidate will also assume a substantive Professorial role within one of the University’s departments.

Salary An excellent salary will be offered commensurate with the seniority of this post and the experience of the successful candidate. The salary is subject to regular review.
Holidays A minimum of 41 days annual leave including bank holiday and closure days (pro rata) with the ability to purchase up to 10 days more of additional annual leave.
Pension Professorial staff can opt to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

  • Support for those going through the menopause We’re the first university in the UK to partner with Peppy Health to provide colleagues and their loved ones with personalised support from expert menopause practitioners.
  • Paid leave for IVF treatment We recognise the emotional and physical challenges which may arise from undergoing fertility treatments. Staff with more than 26 weeks service may take up to five days paid leave (pro rata) per treatment cycle, with up to two days leave per cycle for partners (pro-rata).
  • Physiotherapy All staff get free ten-minute phone calls and video consultations from Pure Physiotherapy. Staff wishing to continue treatments can take advantage of discounted rates.
  • Westfield Health We’ve partnered with Westfield Health to give all staff access to health cover at a discounted rate. You can get money back, up to set limits, on optical check ups, dental appointments and private consultations.
  • Support for staff with caring responsibilities We have a Time Off For Emergency Caring Responsibilities policy which provides enhanced provision of up to five additional days (pro rata) paid leave, to cover emergency caring responsibilities for all staff who combine work and caring responsibilities.

  • Induction You’ll benefit from a structured induction programme, with resources, events and information to help you settle into your role at the University. You will also have access to a series of mandatory training to ensure you can work safely in your new role.
