Appointment of Digital Champions to the School of Policy and Global Affairs

City St George's, University of London

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in joining the School of Policy and Global Affairs (SPGA) at City St George’s, University of London. I’m delighted that you are considering becoming part of our vibrant academic community—a place where bold ideas, transformative teaching, and world-class research come together to shape society for the better.

SPGA is home to three dynamic and ambitious departments: Economics, International Politics, and Sociology & Criminology. Together, we serve over 2,500 students and employ more than 100 academic and professional staff. Our School is recognised for its deep commitment to excellence in research and education, and for the social impact our work has both locally and globally.

This is a particularly exciting moment in our journey. As we look ahead to the future of higher education, we are investing significantly in our digital capabilities and pedagogies. As part of this, we are appointing four Digital Champions—one in each department, with two in Economics, reflecting the department’s size and strategic focus. These roles are a key part of our ambition to embed digital innovation across our teaching and research practices.

Our Digital Champions will play a central role in transforming how we deliver education and engage with students. They will lead the creation of high-quality, asynchronous learning materials, support and mentor colleagues to grow their digital confidence, and act as strategic partners in shaping the university’s digital infrastructure. It is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution—not just to your department, but to the future direction of SPGA and City St George’s as a whole.

At City St George’s, we are proud to be a values-driven institution. Our culture is rooted in care, learning and action. We are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, and we believe strongly in the power of education to create opportunity and positive change. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and are especially keen to hear from individuals who will bring diverse experiences and perspectives to our community.

If you are a passionate educator and researcher with a strong digital orientation—and excited by the chance to help shape what teaching and learning in the social sciences can look like in the years to come—we would be thrilled to hear from you.

Thank you once again for your interest. I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you to our School in the near future.

Warmest regards,

Professor Charles Lees
Executive Dean - School of Policy & Global Affairs

School of Policy & Global Affairs

The School of Policy and Global Affairs (SPGA) is City St George’s school for transformative education and world class research. SPGA is a centre of world class scholarship, education, and public service, making a transformative impact on society. It is home to over 2,500 students and 100 staff in three departments (Economics, Sociology and Criminology, and International Politics). SPGA attracts outstanding members of academic staff who produce world-leading or internationally excellent research of benefit to society; provide innovative and exciting programs of study; and enrich the lives and enhance the career prospects of its students.

Our highly-rated courses in these subject areas equip students with the knowledge and skills to respond to the world’s most pressing policy challenges. With strong links to industry and policy organisations our graduates forge exciting careers in multinational businesses, consultancies, government departments and non-governmental organisations.

In an increasingly uncertain world facing profound geopolitical, environmental and socio-economic transformation, we provide policymakers, activists, business and commercial sectors with world-class research and insight to make sense of the changing global landscape.

Through our research centres and think tanks we are building our research intensity, delivering a significant improvement to the impact of our research. We have international expertise in academic areas including political economy, international relations, global finance, behavioural and health economics, class and gender, crime and justice, and violence and society.

City St George’s membership of the University of London federation helps develop research links between institutions, and foster a sense of community with staff and students from across member universities.

SPGA is determined to achieve a step change in our digital practice, particularly our teaching provision for students and how we undertake and present our research. To do this we are appointing ‘Digital Champions’ in all three of our Departments. Digital champions are subject specialists who use digital means to equip students with the necessary core knowledge to progress, advance and enrich their pedagogic understanding of the subject they study. They build dynamic and constructively aligned learning activities that provide students with the space needed to fully comprehend the issues being presented in a variety of ways, and in a manner that respects individual learners, learning differences, as well as diverse learning communities.
