General Legal Counsel – Private Provider of Higher Education – Hybrid working (occasional travel to London)

We are pleased to be partnering with an ambitious and rapidly scaling private provider of Higher Education on the permanent appointment of their General Legal Counsel. This is a particularly exciting time to join, with recent high-profile appointments of a Chief Academic Officer, a Director of People, and a Deputy Provost. The HEI now wishes to hire an exceptional in-house lawyer to work directly with and advise the CEO and MD on a range of generalist legal matters, relevant to the context of significant student and company growth, international expansion, and an ongoing journey towards indefinite degree awarding powers and university status.

The General Legal Counsel will support senior management in the provision or procurement of legal advice in relation to all aspects of law, including but not limited to: governance, contractual, commercial, corporate, employment, property, litigation, constitutional, statutory, charitable, student complaints and appeals, research ethics, funding and procurement, dispute resolution, general policy matters, intellectual property matters, and international establishment/development of new entities.

The HEI recognise this is a broad remit and they do not expect the candidate to be an expert on every matter – what they are looking for however is an agile, problem-solving, and ownership-oriented approach, combined with sound legal knowledge, commercial acumen and experience gained within both Higher Education and the Private Sector. Experience gained in Private HE or PE/VC backed education organisations would be highly advantageous.
