It is less than four weeks since I joined Anderson Quigley (AQ) to develop the interim management consultancy business which sits alongside AQ’s executive search and advisory offers. I have been delighted with the positive reaction from both the education and wider public/third sectors to our fresh and innovative approach, based on not simply filling vacancies but building better organisations and life-changing careers. Within interim management, we have developed a more personalised and client-centric service, moving away from offering simply the traditional day rate approach to solutions based on fixed term engagements and project-based appointments, which are both outcome and output focused. This approach is partly to offset the changes the new IR35 rules have created in the market, but it is also to meet client and candidate expectations that organisational transformation has to be achieved through more creative means.
Interim management consultants are also becoming more flexible in the way they offer their services to clients – the candidate who only wants to work in the traditional way of trading through their limited company on a day rate basis will find their opportunities much more limited. Those interim managers who have acknowledged that the market is changing and, in many ways, has changed indefinitely will have many more possible assignments presented to them if they are prepared to work on a fixed term contract basis or to be remunerated on achieving (and in some cases exceeding) project milestones. For instance, we are working with a large university in the South of England on an interim FD appointment – the client is keen to attract the best talent on a 6 month fixed term engagement and all of the professional interim managers we approached in our network were prepared to consider this route of engagement. For them, the opportunity and challenge that the role presents was the motivator and they are happy to think differently about their mode of engagement and remuneration.
It’s therefore an exciting time to be involved in the interim management consultancy sector – whether you are a client seeking to attract talent in a more flexible and cost effective way, a candidate who has the skills and mind-set to work in an ever changing market, or an organisation such as AQ with access to a diverse range of client and candidate networks to partner together in the new interim management environment.
