Head of Sport

Job Purpose:
• To provide academic leadership and contribute as a member of the Academic Leadership Team.
• To act as an advocate for the subject area, actively raising the subject profile and promoting the profile of the subject area and institution regionally, nationally, and internationally.
• To have operational oversight and responsibility for academic leadership and enhancement of the subject area working in support and under the leadership, management and direction of the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching.
• To participate actively in aspiration raising, student recruitment and progression and partnership development to attract students and ensure viable cohorts in your subject area.

Role Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Course leadership
• To lead, develop and manage the portfolio of courses in their subject area, ensuring alignment with UA92s Strategy for Learning and Teaching and agreed academic KPIs.
• To resolve operational issues arising from the delivery of courses, taking a One Team approach with relevant staff as necessary, escalating unresolved issues when deem necessary.
• Drive and lead engagement with external partners and community groups to facilitate specific contributions to the curriculum design and delivery, and the wider student experience as required.
• Ensure provision of high quality and engaging learning, assessment, and feedback.
• Ensure high levels of student achievement, innovation, progression, and retention.
• To be responsible for the overall assurance and enhancement of academic standards and quality of the courses and curriculum within the subject area.
• Provide overall operation insight on student progression, retention, and attainment, ensuring course teams deliver grades to registry in a timely manner and that the assessment/progression boards deal with all issues effectively.
• Ensure reporting on key performance indicators and lead on the development and implementation of plans to improve performance.
• Ensure the curriculum is regularly reviewed and currency is maintained and to contribute to the development and validation of new undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the subject area.
• Support the implementation and future development of the Learning and Teaching Strategy.
• Provide oversight of the use of equipment and resources within the subject area.
• Chair subject area meetings and provide academic updates to the academic leadership team.
• Participate in institutional academic forums (committees, sub-groups, working groups, projects) as required.

Staff recruitment, management, and development
• Line manage staff within subject area taking responsibility for performance, development, workloads and all other PeopleHR related matters.
• Create and establish a high performing working environment which is supporting, inspiring and collegial with high levels of engagement and satisfaction.
• Oversee the sourcing, selection, appointment, induction of staff – both substantive and casual that are required to deliver the courses.
• Oversee and implement effectively in your subject area, the strategy for peer observations.
• Ensure that the development needs of academic staff are reviewed regularly, and that staff are supported with their agreed performance objectives.
• Take overall operational responsibility for staffing issues that are identified within the subject area.

Organisational Support / Development
• Participate in knowledge and practice sharing and building of interdisciplinary collaborations both within UA92 and, where appropriate, with external partners.
• Provide academic support for commercial and business development activities, as required.
• Take a leading role in student recruitment activities and ensure student recruitment events and activities are fully supported and targets are met, including, but not limited to, profile and aspiration raising events, subject taster activities, progression partnership building activities, open days, applicant visit days and outreach.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
• Champion the UA92 brand and foster a culture of innovation, growth, shared responsibility and individual accountability focusing on the provision of an excellent student experience.
• Be a pro-active, effective and supportive team member.
• Maintain a cost-conscious and efficient approach when undertaking all aspects of the role in order to effectively manage resources, optimise performance and contribute to the future success of UA92.
• Comply with appropriate legislation and local policy in respect of confidentiality, information governance and security, Freedom of Information, Data Protection and the GDPR.
