In the latest REF, 86% of Trent’s research was world-leading or internationally excellent and our new Associate Dean for Research and Associate Dean for Practice will work across the school and wider university to make sure our research (40% of which is practice-based) and activity contribute to our quality research and impact goals.

We have also launched a new department of Design and Digital Arts (DaDA) which will provide new and exciting opportunities bringing together art, design, technology and business within a landmark new building, the Design & Digital Arts Building, which opens 2024. The new building will accommodate a range of creative technology spaces that support our ambition to offer real world work like experiences with the introduction of a virtual production space, and innovation spaces where students can explore and play with the latest technologies. It will enable the new department to expand its creative industries offer with the introduction of new technologies led curriculum within Film & TV Production Technology, VFX, Games Art & Design and Motion Graphics together with traditional design practices, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Filmmaking, Design for Film & TV, Fine Art, Costume Design and Theatre and Live Performance.

Full details on individual roles can be found below but as we continue to build a strong leadership team across the School, we are looking for individuals with deep backgrounds in an art and design related to the School (specifically digital arts for the Deputy Head). Importantly, you must be a good leader and team player with a positive attitude and vision to help build an ambitious vision for the School.

Our New Home

The Design and Digital Arts Building (DaDA) is a new building for Nottingham School of Art & Design to prepare our graduates for success in professional, technical and commercial careers in the growing cultural and creative industries. Designed by award-winning architects Hawkins\Brown, the building will place Nottingham as a UK hub for film, television, animation, UX design, games design, graphic design and more.

The building will provide dedicated spaces for Nottingham School of Art & Design’s visual communication, moving image and digital screen disciplines. It will also provide opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaboration, social learning and celebration of work in progress as well as finished pieces.

REF 2021

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 83% of NTU’s research submitted to the ‘Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory’ Unit of Assessment was assessed to be world-leading or internationally excellent in terms of research impact. Job purpose:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Principal Duties

  • To effectively deputise for the Head of Department as needed via effective leadership and management of academic staff.
  • To work with the Head of Department in delivering on Departmental, School and University strategic projects.
  • Lead the Principal Lecturers and course teams to develop the student academic experience for the Department. To include, but not limited to:
    1. effective course design and curriculum development;
    2. adherence to quality management processes and regulations, including course validations and accreditations;
    3. enhancement of student satisfaction, utilising findings from module evaluation, the National Student Survey, and PTES;
    4. provision of appropriate student support;
    5. improvement in retention, attainment and employability;
    6. enhancement of student representation; and
    7. effective marketing to prospective students.
  • To support the Head of Department in managing escalated student affairs issues and academic appeals.
  • To maintain personal research, education or practice activity and promote an active research environment within the Department.
  • To support the Head of Department in staff planning activity, including succession planning, recruitment and selection, induction and probation, management of staff attendance, and overseeing the appraisal process to ensure objective setting is aligned to departmental/School plans. Principal duties:

  • To lead on the development and monitoring of the School Research Plan, including overseeing the use of School QR funds to support the Plan. To report formally annually to the Dean of School, Head of College and the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research on progress towards its delivery.
  • To capture detailed information of all research activities undertaken in the School and to ensure the effective utilisation of this information for planning, monitoring and enhancement of research capacity, capability and impact.
  • To work closely with the NTU Research Grant Capture Team, Knowledge Exchange, Impact Officers and the School’s Associate Dean for Practice to identify funding and knowledge exchange and impact opportunities.
  • To lead, coordinate and provide support for the Unit of Assessment Coordinators in the School as they undertake their work to ensure the optimisation of performance on any future assessment of research excellence. To ensure that there is full and effective engagement with the REF preparation activities as determined by the NTU REF Planning Group.
  • To manage the work of the School Postgraduate Research Tutor and/or the Professional Doctorate Course Leader(s) in support of the realisation of the relevant aims of the School Research Plan and the relevant actions of the NTU Strategic Plan.

  • To capture detailed information of all practice and practice-based research activity undertaken in the School and to ensure the effective utilisation of this information for planning, monitoring and enhancement of delivery capacity, capability and impact.
  • To act the lead on NTU KEF activities for the School of Art and Design and to lead and co-ordinate support activities for KEF purposes.
  • To lead, coordinate and provide support for relevant Coordinators in the School as they undertake their work to ensure the optimisation of performance on any future assessment of knowledge exchange activities. To ensure that there is full and effective engagement with the KEF preparation activities as determined by the NTU KEF Planning.
  • To work closely with Associate Dean Research for the School of Art and Design to co-ordinate contributions to REF activities from practice-based research outputs and portfolios.
  • To work closely with the NTU Enterprise and Innovation and Research Grant Capture Teams and Impact Officers to identify funding and knowledge exchange and impact opportunities.
  • To develop and sustain appropriate structures for management, consultation, decision-making and communication with staff and students (where relevant).
  • To stimulate and help build capacity for high quality design practice activity and practice-based research across the School ensuring that Personal Design Practice Plans are wholly integrated as part of staff appraisals.
  • To work closely with the Directors of the NTU Research and Knowledge Exchange Offices and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation to develop opportunities for and to encourage academics to engage in multi-disciplinary design practice and practice-based research activities within the School and, more broadly, across the University and externally with other organisations.
  • To carry design practice that is internationally leading in terms of originality and impact.
  • To lead on producing Development Plans for the School that caters for beneficial opportunities (financial, research, societal) in undertaking Design-Practice based activities.
  • To drive the practice-based activity within the School and to foster a dynamic environment to do so take that complements and integrates with that for research and which complies relevant legislative frameworks.
  • To chair appropriate committee’s (where appropriate) and represent the School on any relevant Practice-Based and Knowledge Exchange Committee’s and panels.
  • To ensure an effective system for the peer review of practice grant applications prior to submission and, when so nominated by the Dean of School, to act as a point of sign-off at the School level for Work-Tribe forms relating to commercial and KE/KT bids, tenders and contracts relating to externally-funded practice activity in line with the School and University’s policies and regulations.
  • Work with the Governance and Legal Services and Knowledge Exchange Teams to ensure that intellectual property arising from practiced based and contract research activities is protected (where appropriate) and or managed correctly and, in general, all commercial and contract research activities are established and managed professionally within the School of Art and Design in accordance with NTU commercial activity protocols.
  • To lead on the effective internal and external communication of the practice-based activities of the School including supporting the management of appropriate publicity and promotional exercises.
  • Work with the School Executive and contribute to the determination, agreement and management of delegated budgets for; staff, revenue, staff development and travel, 3rd stream income, research (including REF), and commercial and practice (including KEF).
  • Contribute to a high-performance culture across the School, including motivation, performance management and professional development of direct reports. Proactively coach and mentor staff within the School regarding Practice-Based activities.
  • To promote a culture of inclusivity, in which individuals are respected and valued in line with University policies and ensuring all statutory obligations are met.
  • Contribute to the leadership and delivery of a pro-active Health and Safety culture within the school, in line with NTU Health and Safety policies.

Terms of appointment

Associate Deans: The University will offer a competitive salary dependent on experience.

Deputy Head of Department: The salary band is £66,245 – £72,080.

A generous holiday entitlement of between 23 and 35 days per year (dependent on grade), staff also receive five University closure days and statutory bank holidays.

The University offers excellent pension schemes to all colleagues, via either:

  • the Local Government Pension Scheme (LPGS), for researchers, professional services and support staff, or
  • Teachers Pensions, for Academics.
