Appointment of the Director of Research Services

Aston University

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in this exciting opportunity to shape and lead the research of Aston University – an inclusive, entrepreneurial and transformational University. Following a decade of rapid growth, we now stand at the threshold of our next stage of development, as captured in our recently-launched Aston 2030 Strategy. This will involve us scaling up, but not for its own sake: our priority is to grow the ‘quantity of quality’, and this applies particularly to our research.

This new role offers the right candidate unique scope not just to deliver growth, but to play a leading role, together with the PVC Research and Enterprise, in setting the right culture for research and research commercialisation at Aston. In doing so, you will have the support of an outstanding team based in Research and Knowledge Exchange. You will also engage with high-quality academic research leadership in the Colleges as well as excellent professional services colleagues, primarily in Finance, the Library, HR and the Colleges. Indeed, in my view, the chance to work across the entire institution, and across an academic portfolio ranging from Medical Sciences to Humanities, is one of the main attractions of this role.

I hope you find the information provided here useful and look forward to receiving your application.

Professor Simon Green
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research)

About us

Built on strong and diverse foundations, Aston University was set up by Birmingham’s employers in 1895 as a technical college to support the needs of the City. From its establishment as a university in 1966 to the present day, Aston University has maintained its focus on meeting the commercial and technical needs of the region.

We are renowned for improving the lifelong prospects, social capital and progression of hard-working students who aspire to develop professional careers and contribute to their communities.

By most measures we are one of the most diverse universities in the UK, with over 70% of our home undergraduate students from BAME communities, compared with 24% average for UK universities, and we welcome international students from over 120 countries each year. A recent study by HEPI ranked Aston University 2nd in England for transforming lives through social mobility at scale. This is embedded across the DNA of Aston University – the results demonstrate our commitment.

We were the first university to include integrated placement years as standard in their degree programmes. Placements, pre-registration years, and work and study abroad opportunities now feature across our undergraduate programmes.

Our alumni community is extensive with over 100,000 engaged alumni from over 170 countries around the world, contributing to the success of their organisations and communities.

  • Ranked 22nd in the Guardian University League Tables 2023.
  • Sustainable campus – Top 30 in the UK’s university rankings (People and Planet University Green League Table, 2022/23).
  • Ranked 4th out of 429 universities by Uni Compare users (2022).
  • Aston University is the second UK university to have an engineering department achieve Athena Swan Gold.

Aston Digital Futures Institute

Aston University is establishing a new interdisciplinary Aston Digital Futures Institute (ADFI), to be launched during 2023-24.

ADFI is a multi-disciplinary research institute, established to provide thought leadership on one of the defining trends for the 2020s – the evolution of developed economies towards what is commonly referred to as ‘Industry 4.0’ and beyond.

Vision

Our vision for the new research institute is rooted in the heritage, specialisms, and location of Aston University:

  • Aston University has a distinguished heritage as a technological University. Under the leadership of its new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aleks Subic, the University is developing a new strategy – Aston 2030 – which will position the University at the cutting edge of digital transformation by focusing strategically on value creation and impact realisation at the interfaces between Health, Digital and Technology.
  • The articulation of ADFI sits at the intersection of all three of the University’s disciplinary Colleges: Engineering and Physical Sciences, Health and Life Sciences, and Business and Social Sciences.
  • Our ambition is to grow research capability and capacity in the Digital Futures space, particularly in the areas of AI in Health, Data Science and Bioinformatics, Gamification and Digital Society.
  • The University’s location is in the heart of the city of Birmingham, and within the city’s designated ‘Birmingham Innovation Quarter (B-IQ)’, which will drive technological innovation in digital tech and health tech.

Six key aims of ADFI

The aims of the new research institute are to:

  • Galvanise and expand the University’s research footprint in the Digital Tech space.
  • Generate significant new research activities, including grant capture at scale, outputs at world-leading (4*) quality and impact with outstanding levels of reach and significance, as well as attracting high-quality PhD students to Aston University.
  • Support innovative academic development and contemporary education in this domain for the University, reflecting its identity as a ‘dual-intensive’ institution.
  • Build strategic partnerships in this area with businesses and public sector organisations in the Midlands and beyond, and driving innovation and impact.
  • Shape and lead the public debate around what society’s digital future might look like and influence socially responsible transformations and sustainable growth.
  • Spearhead Aston University’s contribution to the economic regeneration of Birmingham and the West Midlands through digital transformation.

Knowledge Exchange

Developing mutually beneficial partnerships between industry leaders and our experts to support innovation and promote business growth, the Knowledge Exchange (KE) brings together the worlds of business and academia in a way that increases engagement and allows everyone to benefit from the power of new ideas.

Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 has rated 79% of Aston University research as ‘world leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*).

In addition, 74% of the impact of the University’s research has been rated “very considerable” or “outstanding” for reach and significance.

The number of Aston University staff being submitted for assessment has doubled since the last REF in 2014 and, over the same period, the University has increased the proportion of its highest rated 4* publications from 21% in 2014 to 29% in 2021.

Aston University made a 100% submission of eligible staff across seven REF assessment units and has more than doubled its ‘research power’ since 2014. Research power is calculated by the overall quality of the submission (the ‘grade point average’) multiplied by the full-time equivalent number of researchers submitted.

Supporting our researchers

At Aston we support our academics and researchers throughout the research lifecycle from:

  • providing opportunities to discuss and formulate ideas for research proposals
  • investing in facilities and equipment, and technical support for research
  • bid development (including peer review and costing)
  • all aspects of research integrity and ethics
  • engaging with collaborators as co-creators of research
  • publication and dissemination of outcomes of research (including open data and open access)
